About

Independent research and advice on defence and security in Africa, from a team that spent eight years publishing its working out.

What we do

ADR started in 2013 as a publication about African defence and security. Between then and 2020 the team published 232 articles, investigations, podcasts and infographics, much of it on subjects nobody else was covering in any detail.

We have stopped publishing. The same work now goes directly to the organisations that need it, as research, advice and support for the press.

Independence

We do not carry a brief for a government, a manufacturer or a campaign. Our conclusions come from the public record, named sources and imagery anyone can check, and we say so when the evidence will not support a conclusion. That is the only reason the work is worth paying for.

Discretion

We do not name clients or discuss their work, and we will not use your organisation as a reference. Anything you need to know about how we think is in the archive.

The archive

Every article we published is still at its original address, so old links and citations keep working. Each one shows its date and a note that it is no longer updated.
